Comment of the Day: Troubling...

Today's NY Times Magazine piece about Hillary Clinton's constellation of supporters and allies was accompanied by an illustration showing an unfamiliar celestial object:

My advice is to immediately forget that you ever saw this, but you can find the full-resolution version on the original article page if you really want to see all the... details.

More than a few readers wrote to express their feelings about the image:

Other commenters deemed Planet Hillary "distasteful," "horrific," "disturbing," and "downright creepy," all of which seem apt. Clearly the only explanation was that on a busy day at the NY Times Magazine office, somebody approved an intern's Photoshop experiment without really looking at it. Right?

It was on the cover. And apparently quite a bit of thought went into its development by professional illustrator Jesse Lenz, whose other work is lovely. (I actually kind of like the blue-and-green Hillary Earth, but design director Arem Duplessis thought it "felt forced.")

Duplessis deserves some credit, at least, for also linking to a large collection of spoofs already inspired by the image.
