Comment of the Day: I work the cones

The news that aides to New Jersey governor Chris Christie ordered lane closures on the George Washington bridge in September, apparently for political revenge, has boosted "Christie" into the top 100 most common words in comments for the last two days. There are 2,173 instances of the word in user comments today, putting it between "if" (2,334) and "what" (2,144). (Yesterday the Christie-count was 1,021.)

A scandalous story seems to attract creative commenters, and we detected 18 poems and songs about Gov. Christie and his staff in comments today and yesterday. (We use a machine learning algorithm to help find poems in user comments—more details coming soon.)

And this reflection on parenting techniques wasn't out of place on Gail Collins' editorial speculating on implications for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination:

Actually, neither of those comments has the word "Christie" in it (or "bridgegate," which was mentioned 55 times today and yesterday).
