One comment on today's article about the causes and consequences of sea level rise on the East Coast of the United States proposed this solution to all our problems:
The way RM sets up the calculation is nice, but he or she has made an arithmetic error somewhere. (3,000 square miles * 1,692 inches)/(139,434,000 square miles * 8 inches) = 0.00455, not 0.125. That means the fraction of sea level rise that could be absorbed is only about 0.45%, or 0.036 inches of the 8-inch rise. That's slightly less than one millimeter, even less than Catherine estimates.
